Why Carbon Dioxide May Be the Closest Thing to a "Perfect Medicine"
If a substance were judged by its ability to support life, improve circulation, enhance oxygen delivery, regulate inflammation, protect tissues from injury, and do so with remarkably low toxicity when used appropriately, carbon dioxide would deserve serious consideration as one of the most important therapeutic molecules in biology.
Unlike most medicines, carbon dioxide is not foreign to the body. Every cell continuously produces it as a natural consequence of metabolism. Life itself depends upon a delicate balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide. While oxygen receives most of the attention, carbon dioxide is the master regulator that determines how effectively oxygen is delivered and utilized throughout the body.
The Power of Carbon Dioxide Medicine
Carbon Dioxide medicine is a potent medical intervention because it correctly employs the two primary gases of life, oxygen and carbon dioxide. For over two hundred years, we have had evidence of the healing power of CO2 and the necessity and healing nutritional energy of oxygen. In the end, we see that carbon dioxide is a more basic nutrient than oxygen and that CO2 controls oxygen distribution in the body.
- It is CO2 that liberates oxygen for healing
- It is CO2 that makes oxygen safe.
- It is CO2 that enables us, at home or at the clinic, to deliver a massive wave of oxygen to our cells.

The Biological Foundation of Carbon Dioxide Medicine
This book is not an argument for abandoning conventional care. It is an argument for completing it — for restoring the terrain that makes any therapy more effective. The most direct way to alter CO₂ status is through the breath itself. Slow, reduced-volume, nasal breathing — the core of what Konstantin Buteyko systematized in the 1950s — raises alveolar and arterial CO₂ by reducing minute ventilation. However, institutions do not fund studies on unpatentable molecules. A breathing technique cannot be owned, so unless you are in an ambulance, emergency room, or ICU, doctors will not pay any attention to respiration or, thus, to CO2 levels in the blood.
My daily CO₂ inhalation protocol for myself is something no mainstream clinician would even conceive of as therapeutic. That’s the gap I will close in this book. The fact that I do it while they won’t even study it is an indictment.
Those patients and doctors who harness the three gases of life will be blessed with true healing capabilities and will find their lives extended. In medical terms, it’s a holy trinity of gases. This book will focus on CO2, bicarbonate (CO2’s twin sister), breathing, and oxygen. To grasp the true significance of hydrogen, read my book on that, which will unite the three gases and release a revolution in medical practice to those who are open to change.

Beyond a Waste Gas: The True Role of CO₂
Carbon dioxide is not a waste gas. It is a primary regulator of oxygen release, smooth muscle tone, and acid-base balance. Yet the clinical gaze has been trained for a century to see CO₂ only as something to eliminate — measured on a capnograph, titrated on a ventilator, but never deliberately cultivated. CO2 medicine is ancient in medical history. But modern doctors adopted it widely around 1900, when they found it made anesthesia, and thus surgery, safer.

CO₂ Medicine is not about rejecting modern medicine—it is about completing it. It is about returning to first principles, where the body is seen not as a machine to be overridden, but as a system to be regulated. By restoring carbon dioxide balance through breathing, consuming sodium, potassium, and magnesium bicarbonates, and breathing carbogen (carbon dioxide inhalation therapy), we open the door to better circulation, calmer nerves, and more efficient cellular oxygenation.

- The Bohr Effect: Drugs often try to force oxygen into tissues by increasing heart rate or blood volume. CO₂ does so naturally by shifting the hemoglobin dissociation curve. It is the key that unlocks oxygen from the blood and delivers it to starving cells.
- Vasodilation without Toxicity: Many blood pressure drugs cause “side effects” like dizziness, fatigue, or kidney strain. CO₂ naturally relaxes vascular smooth muscle, improving perfusion to the brain, heart, and kidneys without any toxic side effects.
- pH Balancing: Pharmaceuticals often drive blood chemistry toward acidity, worsening the metabolic state. CO₂—when handled through bicarbonate, carbon dioxide inhalation, and proper breathing—buffers the body’s pH, protecting the cell’s electrical potential and insulin signaling.
- The Governor of the System: CO₂ acts as a stabilizer. It calms the nervous system, prevents the “fight or flight” loop, and protects the mitochondria. When a doctor prescribes metformin or a statin, they are adding a chemical burden to a patient who is already suffocating from low oxygen and magnesium starvation. We cannot drug our way out of deficiencies.

Everyone knows that all biological life is pH-sensitive, which applies to both the inside and the outside of cancer cells. The cells’ surroundings, known as their microenvironment, contribute to how cancer develops and spreads. The interactions between cancer cells and acidic micro and macroenvironments create a context that promotes tumor growth and protects them from immune attack. Living tissue continually produces or consumes acids (or bases) through chemical reactions. Because of cellular respiration (yielding CO2 and lactic acid), most cells are net acid producers; hence, intracellular pH (pHi) tends to fall.
It is essential to note that CO2 is bicarbonate’s twin sister. They are two forms of the same thing. When we take bicarbonate, the acid in the stomach or lemon in the glass turns bicarbonates into CO2. We observe a constant, ultra-fast interaction between bicarbonate and CO2 in the blood. To understand bicarbonate medicine and why it is as powerful and vital as it is, one must appreciate CO2 physiology.
